barge city

Pier 17, Mission Bay

San Francisco, CA, USA

Like many similar sites across the united states, the vestiges of pier 70’s shipbuilding industry and infrastructure in San Francisco’s Mission Bay is slated for historic preservation and major development. Barge City positions itself as a counter-narrative to a contemporary development ethos and politics which values private consumption over productive capacity and public culture. The project’s dedicated social spaces and barge production facility allow for an array of programmatic possibilities: from a floating garden, to a motel room, an event space, or even emergency housing units which become permanent or temporary fixtures of the immediate bay.
